Fall shows so far
New shows, returning shows, and my schedule night-by-night
Let's start with the new shows, and my brief opinions of them, shall we?
In order of premiere date:
K-Ville, on FOX. Disliked. Decided not to continue watching. The premise was interesting, but the acting and writing not so much. The camera work seemed to be trying to be NYPD Blue, and it just wasn't working.
Gossip Girl, on the CW. Like. It's nice to hear Kristen Bell's voice narrating a show, but she's all mean and snarky - like, cruel snark not fun snark. One of the main characters is a rapist, so that's difficult, but he seems to be getting what's coming to him, so there's at least some justice to it.
Kid Nation on CBS. Surprisingly? Like and may even love. I was prepared to hate this monstrosity of a reality show, but these kids are so determined and sweet and strong and fun to watch - I can't tear myself away!!
Back to You on FOX. Hated. It's like someone took a bad 80's sitcom script out of a desk somewhere, dusted it off, and decided to turn it into a Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton vehicle. It was so vile that even I only lasted 10 minutes into it before stopping it and hastily deleted the episode, never to return again.
Chuck on NBC. Like with the possibility of loving. So far I've only caught the pilot, and will watch the second ep probably tonight or tomorrow. I very likely will fall in love with this silly show.
The Big Bang Theory on CBS. Like. For a half hour comedy, it's not bad. I don't feel like I have to watch it, but it's been fun to watch so far, and is a good slot after How I Met Your Mother, I think.
Journeyman on NBC. Love it. Which threw me because I was prepared to hate it. I just watched it because there's nothing else in that time slot that I like, so figured I'd give the pilot a try. Now I'm hooked.
Cane on CBS. Love it, love it, love it. This was the first new show that met my expectations one way or the other. I went in thinking I'd love it and did, which made me happy.
Reaper on the CW. Like it with a strong chance of loving it. I haven't watched the second episode yet, so it's hard to tell for sure, but I feel like this one is a winner for me. I really like Tyler Labine, who plays the main character's best friend "Sock", and Ray Wise makes a great comedic devil.
Dirty Sexy Money on ABC. Love it. Not as good as I wanted it to be, but still good enough to love. We get some comedy, some crazy family drama, some murder mystery, some romance, some ... well dirty sexiness. It's all good.
Private Practice on ABC. Like it. Could love it in time. It's different from Grey's - it's a lot lighter in tone and much less soapy. But it's chock full of amazing actors portraying interesting characters in a setting just right for all kinds of wacky story lines.
Bionic Woman on NBC. This is a solid like, which could go in either direction towards love or dislike. So far I'm digging it for a lot of reasons, but it's not really the best quality. There's some really good actors on the show (Miguel Ferrer, Molly Price, Katee Sackhoff), but so far the star of the show - Michelle Ryan - isn't getting to me the way I'd like.
Life on NBC. Like it. Don't expect it to get much over a like, but will keep watching it for now. I think it needs to make up it's mind if it wasn't to be light and funny or serious and mysterious. Some shows can pull off both, but it's hard to do, and so far, this one isn't doing it well.
Big Shots on ABC. Love it - with a slight aversion. It's basically the male version of Desperate Housewives, so it's raunchy and twisted and full of dark humor but also good depictions of close friendships of a single gender (although one of the men has a close female friend). Because it's the male version, there's a lot of sexism towards women, but it's not like they don't all dig on their male counterparts in Desperate Housewives, so I'm trying to take it in perspective.
Moonlight on CBS. Like it. So far it's not totally sucking me in, but for a Friday night show, it's not bad at all. Jason Dohring's character is pretty blah so far, but we're only two episodes in, so in time hopefully they'll draw him out a little more. They seem to be slowly educating the audience about the backdrop of the story each week, so we'll see how it progresses.
Aliens in America on the CW. Somewhere between like and dislike. It could end up being really horrible or somewhat enjoyable and from the pilot, I'm not sure which way it's going to go, yet.
Carpoolers on ABC. Love it. Funniest new show of the season so far. I was laughing hysterically in the first minute of the show and had to rewind that first minute over and over to keep re-watching it. The rest of the episode was pretty good, too. Tim Peper, who plays Dougie on the show, has some fantastic comedic facial expressions. And I've known for awhile now that Jerry O'Connell is a riot.
Pushing Daisies on ABC. Love it! It's whimsical, funny, cute, sweet, dark, and romantic all wrapped up in one. Bryan Fuller, the show's creator, is amazing. The actors are all wonderful. The concept is fantastic, the cinematography is blissful, everything about this show is a win.
Shows coming up yet that I'm planning to watch and evaluate:
Life is wild, premiering tomorrow night.
Women's Murder Club, premiering Friday night.
Samantha Who? starts the 15th.
Viva Laughlin starts the 18th.
and Cashmere Mafia begins in November.
Then there's all the "midseason" shows, some with scheduled projected dates already in January and some just hanging out for replacement shows when stuff starts to get canceled.
As far as returning shows so far this fall?
Prison Break is rocking my boat. I didn't know if they could keep up the pace in the third season, but they're doing a marvelous job. How this show continues to keep me on the edge of my frigging seat every week - I don't know. But I do know that I love it!
Dancing With the Stars - only catch partial eps here and there due the conflicts, but it's just as enjoyable as ever this year. I'm rooting for Cameron Mathison and Jennie Garth this season.
Heroes - woot! Woot! Woot! Heroes! Woot! 'Nuff said.
How I Met Your Mother - still digging it, but maybe not as much as the previous seasons. Maybe once Ted gets a new romantic interest, it'll pick up again. Niel Patrick Harris still steals the show each week, though.
NCIS - still an enjoyable show. Still don't quite get why people are as into it as they are, but I do enjoy it.
Criminal Minds - sad to see Mandy Patinkin go, but this season has been exciting and interesting and informative yet again so far.
Grey's Anatomy - as good as ever, which is pretty damned good. Glad Isiah Washington left, because I feel it was either going to be him or T. R. Knight, and I like T. R. Knight's character a lot more. Cute little puppy dog George. The new interns, and the old interns becoming residents, is a fun new addition - especially having Merideth's half-sister joining the crew.
My Name is Earl - lost track of this one last season, but caught the pilot and still find this show to be really good and funny. Not sure if it's good enough to keep me watching each and every episode, but I'll watch it when I can.
The Office - as hysterical as ever. Also - JIM AND PAM!!!!! Yay! I'm in love with this show.
Smallville - loving it as usual. Love the Supergirl twist this season. Really hoping Clark learns to fly this year!
ER - this show is still chugging along somehow. It's not that it's bad - it's just that it's pretty much done everything it can do three times already, so everything is recycled. It's still written and directed and acted well, it's just ... old.
Ghost Whisperer - I like that Melinda Gordon continues to grow and change and learn more about her powers and her purpose and what's going on in the under world. And I love Jay Mohr's character so much.
Las Vegas - they're finally using more of Vanessa Marcil this season - at least so far. I'm thrilled about that as she's my main reason for watching. My second main reason for watching was James Caan and he appears to be out now, but oh well. It's still a fun fluffy show to watch once a week.
Numb3rs - still solidly mediocre. I may not catch every episode this season, but I'm still checking it out.
Brothers & Sisters - blows me away with it's goodness. Seriously good stuff with seriously amazing actors. I mean it. It seriously does blow my mind how good each story line, each scene, each line is. Watch this show!
Desperate Housewives - struggled a bit last season, but I think it's back this year. It's good having Marcia Cross back, and the addition of Dana Delany and Nathan Fillion is a very good choice. They seem to have a crazy dark secret just like everyone else on the block, so it'll be fun to watch the new crazy dark secret unravel itself.
Law & Order: Criminal Intent - now on USA, but still airing new episodes, and just as fun to watch as ever. Or at least, the pilot was, because it was a Vincent D'Onofrio episode. Next week, with Chris Noth and a new actress as his new partner - we'll see.
Supernatural - super scary, super sexy, super dramatic, super funny, super awesome! More (spoiler-ey so not belonging in this post) thoughts on that later.
Still to return this season:
Men in Trees on Friday, Scrubs mid-month, and 30 Days at the end of October.
Midseason returnees - October Road, Law & Order, Medium, The Riches, Jericho, and One Tree Hill.
Now, on to what my TV schedule looks like night-by-night, because, yes, I am just that geeky.
Mondays:
7pm: Prison Break will be recorded for sure. Chuck will most likely be recorded as my second show in this slot unless they continue to reair the eps at other times/channels, in which case I'll do that and continue recording How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory. If and when Chuck starts getting recorded instead, I'll probably try and catch How I Met Your Mother online each week. My next priority in this slot, if all other shows are on at other times or not on or in reruns, would be Dancing With the Stars. After that, possibly Everybody Hates Chris and Aliens in America.
8pm: Heroes for sure. And then Dancing With the Stars and possibly Samantha Who if I end up liking it. A show in this time slot I'd catch if everything else was not on or in reruns would be Rules of Engagement.
9pm: Journeyman for sure, and that's it.
Tuesdays:
7pm: NCIS and Carpoolers
8pm: Reaper and Dancing With the Stars for now. We'll see about Cashmere Mafia when it comes out.
9pm: Cane for sure, and that's it here.
Wednesdays:
7pm: Pushing Daises for sure, I haven't decided to regularly record or just catch as able for Kid Nation yet, although I'm leaning towards recording it regularly.
8pm: Private Practice is the top one this hour for me. Next is Bionic Woman, I think, but will record it at alternative times whenever possible. Because there's also Gossip Girl, which I'll also record at alternative times whenever possible. Because there's also Criminal Minds. I might end up just bumping Criminal Minds up to second or at least third, but I can't decide and since I still have the option at this point, I'm taking it.
9pm: Dirty Sexy Money for sure, Life for now and I'll decide later if I want to keep up with it, and CSI NY live on nights when I'm watching live TV and there's not more than one thing already recording at that time.
Thursdays:
7pm: Smallville for sure, and My Name is Earl
8pm: Supernatural and Grey's Anatomy for sure, The Office and Scrubs as second whenever either of those are in reruns and will catch The Office online for missed weeks whenever I can, and if all of the above are in reruns - I might watch CSI live.
9pm: Big Shots and ER for the recording, Without a Trace if either of those aren't on or new
Fridays:
7pm: Ghost Whisperer
8pm: Moonlight, and possibly Women's Murder Club if that's any good
9pm: Men in Trees and Las Vegas most likely will stay in the higher priority slots, with Numb3rs getting recorded whenever they're not on or new that week
Sundays:
7pm: Life is Wild and Viva Laughlin both if they're both good
8pm: Desperate Housewives for sure, Cold Case if I feel like watching live TV
9pm: Brothers & Sisters for sure, Shark if I feel like watching live TV
And THIS is one of many examples of why judging things by Nielsen ratings is so stupid. Because the shows I love the most are the ones I record and save up and watch days or even sometimes weeks after they're aired (and I know I'm not alone here), and shows I only sort of kinda like are the ones I watch live. And either way - I don't watch commercials. If recorded, I fast forward, obviously. If watching live, I still pause and fast forward through the commercials or just get up and leave the room during them. I'm probably more likely to catch the commercials of the shows I record and watch later, because you inevitably end up watching a few here and there that way anyway, and those are the episodes I watch several times over and so am more likely to catch more of the commercials. So, yea, mini-rant done.
Post done.
Will seriously try and catch up for reals sometime soon. I just had to get all that TV stuff out of my system. Of course, more is coming as the season progresses, because, yea, television is my life. Whatever.
